Prayer Focus on Nelson/Tasman Region
Rev. Watiri Maina is an Anglican priest serving in the Nelson Diocese of New Zealand. Originally from Kenya, she is married to Steve Maina, the Bishop of the Nelson Diocese.
Watiri is deeply involved in spiritual care and formation. She is a spiritual director, retreat facilitator, supervisor, educator and pastoral counsellor in private practice.
She is passionate about prayer and seeing God at work, making all things whole and new.

For the recovery situation in the Tasman and Nelson regions following the devastating July 2025 floods:
Current Situation. As of 14 July 2025
The region remains in a state of emergency after experiencing what officials are calling a “1-in-100-year flood.” The rains have caused widespread damage to homes, farms, roads, and forests. Over 750 properties have been assessed, with several red- and yellow-stickered due to safety concerns. Dozens remain in emergency accommodation, and many schools and early childhood centres are still closed.
Key Prayer Needs
1. For Displaced Families
o Pray for comfort, shelter, and swift restoration for the 43+ people still in emergency housing.
o Many have lost homes, possessions, and livelihoods.
2. For Emotional and Mental Health
o The trauma of the floods has left many feeling overwhelmed and heartbroken.
o Pray for peace, resilience, and access to mental health support.
3. For Recovery Workers and Volunteers
o Civil Defence, local councils, and volunteers (including the Student Volunteer Army, who are working tirelessly to coordinate aid).
o Pray for strength, safety, and coordination in their efforts.
4. For Local Churches and Community Groups
· Churches and groups like FIRST72 are mobilising to provide both immediate relief and long-term support, including offering spiritual care, meals, and practical help (food, shelter, and financial assistance).
o Pray for wisdom, resources, and unity as they serve their communities.
5. For Infrastructure and Restoration
o Roads, riverbanks, and utilities need urgent repair to prevent further damage.
o Pray for effective rebuilding and protection from future weather events.
