About Sports Chaplaincy
Phil Pawley and his wife Diane have been involved in national and international missions for all but four of their forty-seven years of marriage. Twenty of those years were spent in St Helens, England, during which time Phil was Diocesan Missioner for the Liverpool Diocese and inaugural sports chaplain for St Helens Rugby League. They returned home in 2009 with Phil serving as Senior Pastor of Morrinsville Baptist Church until 2018.
For these last seven years Phil has been National Director of Sports Chaplaincy NZ (SCNZ), a Christian charity dedicated to placing chaplains into sports clubs and teams across the motu. With one hundred and ten accredited volunteers donating from four to six hours a week, SCNZ Chaplains are the ‘boots on the ground’ when it comes to athlete well-being. They are an independent, confidential presence serving in twenty-three different sports codes and at all levels from school sports to elite and high-performance sports. SCNZ works in partnership with local churches wherever possible and is funded almost entirely by donations and grants.
